Should You Stay Or Should You Go Now? A Guide To Deciding On Divorce

Posted on

If you are in a troubled marriage, then you may be thinking about getting a divorce. However, before you make the decision to completely end your marriage, you may want to be sure that you have tried everything possible to repair your marriage. This way, you can come to the conclusion that divorce is the right choice for you without overwhelming feelings of doubt and possibly even guilt. Here are some of the things you may try to do to repair a marriage:

Go to marriage counseling

A lot of people don't like the idea of counseling because they generally don't understand how it can help with their issues. However, the truth is that marriage counselors have done extensive schooling in order to learn different ways to help clients repair what is broken in their marriages. Before you decide to completely end your marriage, you should at least give counseling a try. You just may find that the problems in your marriage can actually be worked through once you are given the tools and guidance to try to work through some of the issues you are having with your partner. Sometimes it is even a good idea to see a counselor both as a couple and as an individual.

Try taking a long vacation together

You may want to take a long vacation as a couple. You won't want to bring the children or anyone else with you. The point will be to go somewhere where the two of you can escape the hustle and bustle that has become your everyday life together. Getting away from it all as a couple can give you time to enjoy each other and the marriage again and move past some bad feelings that you may be harboring over things that have happened.

Try a temporary separation

Sometimes what you may need is a temporary separation from your spouse. This can give you some clarity on the situation because you will be able to think about things while you aren't caught up in the everyday hardships of the marriage. You can also get a good feel for what your life would really be like if you did end up going through a divorce. You may find that you actually prefer to be on your own and want a divorce, or you may find that you really miss them and want to try even harder to work through the things that the two of you are having problems with.

Once you decide divorce is the only option

If the two of you decide that there is no salvaging the marriage then you should get your own divorce attorney. It's a good idea to get an attorney right away and not try to do the divorce on your own. What may seem like it is going to be a friendly divorce can very quickly turn ugly and you want to have someone there in your corner fighting for you who knows the law and can protect your interests.
